App passwords are special one-time codes that let third-party applications like the Zoho Mail Backup Tool. It connects securely to your Zoho Mail account when Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) is turned on. These passwords come in handy for apps or devices that can’t sign in using the regular Zoho login method. Before creating one, make sure your Zoho Mail account is active and that 2FA is enabled. Typically, app passwords are used for older email clients or utilities such as Outlook, Thunderbird, or other backup tools that don’t support direct Zoho authentication.
Open your web browser and visit https://accounts.zoho.com on your computer.
Enter your Zoho email address in the given field and click on Next.
Type in your Zoho account password to sign in. Alternatively, you can log in using an Email OTP.
Once logged in, click on your Profile and navigate to the Security tab located in the left sidebar.
Under the Security section, click on App Passwords, then select Generate New App Password.
Provide a name for the app you want to connect — for example, Zoho Mail.
Click the Generate button to create a new app password.
A 16-character app password will be displayed on the screen. Copy it securely, as you’ll need it in the following step.
