When using applications like the AOL Mail Backup Tool, you can’t use your regular AOL account password to access your emails. That’s because AOL’s security measures require a special app password for third-party apps. This unique password creates a secure bridge between the application and your account and ensures your data remains protected from unauthorized access. If you’re unsure how to generate this password, this guide will walk you through the step-by-step process to create a Third-Party App Password for your AOL account.
You must create a secure app password in order to access the AOL online service in a third-party application. Create an application password for your AOL account by following the steps below:
Sign in to the AOL Mail account with your credentials.
From the dashboard, click on the Home tab in the top right corner.
From the dropdown, click on Account Security and proceed.
Next, scroll down and click on the Generate app password.
Now, enter your application name and click on Generate Password button.
You will receive your App Password for your chosen application. Copy & Paste it for future use and click Done.
When setting the app password for your AOL account, you had to disable two-factor authentication. Additionally, one must reactivate two-step verification in order to secure AOL account data. To activate two-step verification, follow the steps listed below:
Sign in to the AOL Mail account with your credentials.
From the dashboard, click on the Home tab in the top right corner.
From the dropdown, click on Account Security and proceed.
Scroll down and go to the Two-step verification section, and click Turn On.
In Two-step verification, select the way to enable it. For instance, we choose verification via Phone Number.
Enter the mobile number to receive the code or select if displayed.
Now, enter the one-time verification code and click Next.
Now, choose another way to secure your AOL mail account and click to Add more account recovery options.
Afterwards, select Email or Phone according to you for recovery and click Next. (We selected the Email.)
Type your recovery email address and click Next.
Afterward, enter the verification code received in your email. Hit Next.
Cross-check the info you added to your AOL mail for 2-step verification and recovery, and click Next.
Finally, you will get a confirmation pop-up that 2-step verification is enabled. Click Done.
Pro Tip: You don’t need to enable IMAP manually to create an app password in Gmail. App passwords are part of Google’s 2-Step Verification security feature. Once you turn on 2-Factor Authentication in your Google account, you can generate app passwords for your Gmail application.
